During the month of October, many women gather together to raise awareness for Breast Cancer. Finding the cure for this awful disease is extremely important. According to breastcancer.org, 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their life. And 85% of new cases are found in women who have had no history of breast cancer in their family. That means anyone is at risk for breast cancer, so raising awareness can save so many lives.

History
Before we talk about what you can do to raise awareness, let’s find out why Breast Cancer Awareness Month is in October.
A 68 year old woman named Charlotte Haley experienced true pain when her sister, daughter, and granddaughter had all been diagnosed with breast cancer. She felt that there was not enough research and fundraising devoted to this type of cancer. She began handing out peach colored ribbons in an effort to spread the word. Many companies saw her efforts and used her pink ribbon symbol as their own to even further her work. In 1991, the Susan G. Komen Foundation used pink ribbons during their race to raise money for breast cancer research in New York. After that in 1993, Estee Lauder’s president, Evelyn Lauder, established The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and officially assigned the pink ribbon to breast cancer.
But the true reason Breast Cancer Awareness Month is in October is because in 1985, a company, NBCAM, was founded to promote women to get mammograms. Ever since then, October has been seen as a time to focus on breast cancer and encourage everyone to do something about it.
